A Tribute To Mr. Qarase

  • Wed 22nd April 2020

Statement By Savenaca Narube, Leader of Unity Fiji

“It was so sad to learn of the passing away yesterday of former Prime Minister Mr. Laisenia Qarase. Fiji has lost a Leader who, rather reluctantly, sacrificed a successful career to heed the national call to lead the interim administration after the prolonged 2000 crisis. Mr. Qarase went on to lead the first government to be re-elected to a second term in Parliament.

As one that worked closely under Mr. Qarase’s leadership, I considered him one of the greatest modern leaders Fiji has ever had. He was not a career politician. Having held the helm of the Fiji Development Bank, Mr. Qarase brought professionalism and technical skills to the leadership of the country which had a huge positive impact on the entire nation and the international communities. Investor and business confidence responded to his consultative, quiet and respectful leadership style. With his financial qualifications and practical experience, his economic and financial decision-making was well respected by his Cabinet and civil servants.

The entire nation was shocked to witness the ill treatment of Mr. Qarase and his family after the overthrow of his government in December 2006. It was tragic to see his pension withheld, his persecution and incarceration. What happened to Mr. Qarase whose only mistake was to sacrifice his career to heed the country’s call at a time of need, is a tragic reflection of the huge personal price that families pay for the illegal overthrows of governments in Fiji.

I pray that Mr. Qarase’s struggles will not be in vain and that we, the people, will choose national leaders that respects us, puts our interests first and possess the right qualifications for the job.

On behalf of Unity Fiji, I extend our sincere condolence to Leba, the family and the Vanua of Mavana. I pray that the Almighty will grant you comfort at this time of loss.

Rest in eternal peace Lai. Your legacy will live on.”
