Press Release

Unity Fiji successfully concluded its first visit to the Northern Division since its registration. The visit from 30th August to 2nd September, covered Bua, Savusavu and Labasa. Similar to its recent tour of the Western Division, the main aim of the visit was to thank its members who enabled Unity Fiji to register. Of the required number of members of 1,000 from the Northern Division, Unity Fiji received 2,200. In keeping with its motto to put people first, the second aim of the visit was to listen to the people on matters that concern them for inclusion in the party’s manifesto. The last aim was to introduce Unity Fiji to the people.

Comprising of the Party Leader Savenaca Narube, President Adi Sivia Qoro and General Secretary Satish Kumar, Unity Fiji met with all ethnic groups and talked to students, shopkeepers, cane farmers, business people and villagers. Unity Fiji wanted to listen to the ordinary people who do not normally have the chance to be heard. Instead of calling town hall type of meetings, the Unity Team visited the communities to see firsthand their living conditions and the challenges that they face. The visits were appreciated by these communities.

The Leader of Unity Fiji, Savenaca Narube said “We wanted to reach out to the ordinary people. We heard the same messages in the North that we heard in the Western Division that the challenges that they face are not new--they have been there for a long time but no lasting solution has been found. They talked about their concerns on the ownership, use, and lease of land; the problems that plague the sugar industry; the lack of basic needs like water and electricity; the lack of jobs; and the poor road conditions. People were wary of assistance that only show up before elections. They felt that their voices were not being heard. The resource owners again stressed that despite promises made to them, they remain cash poor.”

Unity Fiji has noted these concerns. With its experienced team and multiracial platform, Unity Fiji will find solutions with the aim of building lasting national unity. In finding these solutions, Unity Fiji will apply one of its founding principles that it will be fair to everyone irrespective of race, religion, gender, or age.

Savenaca Narube concluded that “We had a very successful first visit to the North. It reaffirms our belief that the people are not the problem. They live side by side in harmony and goodwill. It’s politics that have divided us. We have heard the voice of the people and we will take these into account in preparing our manifesto. We will go back to the North when the manifesto is ready”

Unity Fiji will begin its visit to the Central Division in the week beginning 18th September with a dinner to launch the party in Suva on Friday 22nd September.
